Boxer - Leah - Medium - Senior - Female - Dog
03-11-14: Leah Is A Boxer We Could Not Refuse To Help We received the following email regarding an older boxer in danger at an Animal Shelter out of our area. I know we are out of your coverage area. I googled senior boxer rescue and got your site. I am desperate to try and find a good rescue for a beautiful girl in our shelter. I thought maybe if you had a foster with room, you might make an exception. Her name is Leah. She was a stray that came in ......very bad shape. We have fattened her up and taken very good care of her. Our shelter is overloaded and much to my dismay, we are NOT a no - kill facility. And of course, the seniors are always in danger. I am very worried Leah will not be given the time needed to find a home for her. Would there be any way you could help us? We would find a way to transport to you. We would also have Leah vet checked before she leaves. She is so beloved by all the volunteers....she is a very gentle girl with no behavior problems of any kind. She's housetrained here at the shelter and walks beautifully on her leash. CAN YOU HELP US ? Several of us at NBR read this email and we all came to the same conclusion. If there was no other Rescue who would help Leah and she was in danger we would do everything possible to take her into our Rescue program to keep her safe. We contacted the woman at the Shelter and found out that, once again, we were the only organization who responded to her pleas. We quickly put out the word to our volunteers to see if anyone had room to foster Leah. Thankfully, a family who had adopted a senior dog from us in the past agreed to foster her. We called to make the necessary transport arrangements and the Shelter was thrilled to work with us. The next morning we received an email from the woman at the Shelter informing us that a couple came into the Shelter who wanted to adopt Leah and we were cautiously optimistic that Leah would soon have a family to call her own. We were asked if we would stay on stand-by until they checked with the couples landlord and we of course said we would. Eight hours later we received another email telling us that the adoption fell through. It turned out that this couple had an intact male dog and they planned on keeping Leah tied outside to a dog house in freezing temperatures. We were so thankful that this Shelter took the time to check where Leah would be living and declined the adoption. Sadly, many Shelters do not do as good a job. We were now back on track to get Leah out of the Shelter and into a home. Leah has turned out to be even a better dog than the Shelter described her to be. She is estimated to be 8 to 10 years old and appears healthy. She is spry and easily jumps into bed or on the furniture which she relishes. Leah gets along with all people and all creatures. She is loving and affectionate in addition to being well behaved as are most of the elderly canines we encounter. This is why we have such a soft spot in our hearts for the senior dogs. If you have never had the privilege to adopt an older boxer.this is your chance.
